Kendo, a Japanese Martial art of sword-fighting, has a long and colourful history. Kendo has been practised in Finland since 1980’s and in Joensuu since 2006. Kendo is suitable for both young and old, men and women.
The Joensuu Kendo Club holds 2 beginner’s courses per year, starting in September and late January – early February. The current price is 70 euros, which includes the practise fee and the obligatory insurance through the Finnish Kendo Association. The beginners also purchase a bamboo sword, shinai – the club members will help you to choose the right one for you. For the beginner’s course you do not need to have a hakama or gi but sweatsuit pants (or the like) and a t-shirt. Similarly, you do not need to have any previous knowledge of other Martial arts.
Unfortunately, we do not have resources for instructing children, so we have set the age limit to 15. If you are 15 or over (no limits to highest age) we warmly welcome you to take part in our beginner’s course.
For more information, practise times or if you have previous knowledge of kendo and wish to continue your hobby, please contact the chairwoman, Ainomaija Paakkinen (puheenjohtaja @ joensuunkendo . net) or +358 44 54 34 440.
